I Had This Random Thought About TV Marketing and Social Media...

Last night I was on Facebook and came across this video posted by Castle's Stana Katic.

Aside from being cute and funny, I also noticed the comments. People are engaged and talking. Same thing with the actors and production team of Law & Order: SVU who I also follow. And, now that I think about it, the BBC and SyFy.

But then I got to thinking about how some people use social media. Grimm recently did a really cool thing where they gave people the option to follow and request a link for a "sneak peak" and the premiere episode. Instead of worrying that giving people early access might lower the number of people watching on premiere night, they took a gamble that people watching it early would tweet and Facebook about it in a positive manner. And, for the most part, people did.

But it's just as easy for people to set up a presence on Twitter or Facebook for a movie or TV show and use it more of a broadcast tool. Which, in my opinion, just...fails.

The Castle think got me thinking that, as we go on, a show's success will be helped or hurt by the way they handle their social media. And then I started wondering if the people who're out there marketing those shows even have an idea of just what good social media is.

Anyway, just my ponderation.

Out of curiosity, if you have shows (or movies) you think either win or fail in this arena, I'd like your thoughts. I'm enjoying the ponderations and more input is always good.

28 Ghosts of 28 Girls - The Kickstarter I Most Want To See Happen This Year. I Need Your Help.

I wrote about this project and what it means to me a few days ago, but I wanted to add a few thoughts and ask for your help.

Jewel's looking to self publish a book. The 6k being raised is to cover half the project. Jewel herself has raised the other half. This isn't someone who waits for people to help her make things happen, but she needs some help. She's 41% of the way in on Kickstarter, and close to 75% of the way in overall. Still, there's another 3,400 to raise (and here's the link to the Kickstarter project)

So, here's my proposal. Read this essay she wrote called "Becoming You". Or just read this piece she posted on FB a bit ago. Read them and then decide if you see magic in her as I do.

revolution of the toes: earth-spinning
I am beautiful when I am dancing. Not this finger-snap hand jive shit, but surrender-dancing: head thrown back, arms wide, hips tilted into tomorrow, eyes wild and glossy, everyth...ing in a disarray. I could make it rain if I struck my heel to the ground, ignited the brush, and defied the sky not to do my wishes. Rain born of dancing is a sacred ritual. I never feel beautiful, except when I dance and when I risk it all for a glance from the right set of eyes. I will dance forever. Be buried in ballerina slippers and a wildcat’s grin. My skin will turn to a flamenco dancer’s gauze, my hair to violin strings.

Her voice needs your help to be published. If you can't donate, please share the link. I want to give her this gift. I need your help.

28 Ghosts of 28 Girls - A Kickstarter That's Personal For Me. Please Help. ;-)

Way back in the day, I had this little blog on LiveJournal. In many ways, LJ was the beginning of my journey to discover myself as who I am today. It was a place for me to write, to think, to share, and to interact with other people who (unlike most of the outside world I was dealing with at the time) were like me.

One of the people on LJ who impacted my life (and heart, and soul, and imagination, yadda) was a muse named Jewel Blackfeather.

I just found out this morning that Jewel's got a Kickstarter project and she's looking to raise $6000.00 to self publish her book 28 Ghosts of 28 Girls.

If I could, I'd send her the entire amount. Hell, I'd send extra just so she could make more copies. But I don't have that sort of money.

However, I do have a blog and fingers, and a wild nature and I can ask each person reading to donate even a dollar and share this. I can be unreasonable and bold. I can ask you to share your time and money just because I'm asking and because I personally love this woman.

Jewel taught me to be all of those things. It seems only fair I should employ them to do this for her.

The Kickstarter link is here. I thank you for your time.

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere: 15th Anniversary Edition (My Review)

I previously mentioned that I got the DVD of the 15th anniversary of the Neverwhere miniseries that aired on BBC.

::grin:: I've gotten some interesting comments from some of you folks and, I'll be honest, some of you guys don't remember it too fondly.

But I'm gonna give you my thoughts and maybe it'll change your mind and encourage you to give it another look.

From what I understand and as Neil Gaiman mentioned on the commentary back in the day (we also have the original miniseries DVD at Chateau Geek), the miniseries wasn't quite "finished" when it aired. It was shot on video for budgetary reasons and, while the plan was to go in and make it look more like film, the budget didn't allow for it in the end. Hence, when it aired, the look of it felt wrong.

I also think, and this is my opinion, that people have become much more familiar with the look and feel of BBC productions. My guess is that, 15 years ago, things we now take for granted might have felt...odd.

The 15th Anniversary edition has been remastered and definitely for the better. I'm 3 episodes in and
I've been enjoying it immensely. I'd definitely suggest picking up this new version and giving it a shot.

Just a reminder, here's what's included.

BONUS FEATURES:

  • 15th Anniversary Intro with Neil Gaiman, Lenny Henry and producer Clive Brill
  • 15th Anniversary Audio Commentary with Gaiman, Henry and Brill
  • Original Interview with Gaiman
  • Original Audio Commentary with Gaiman
  • Photo Gallery
  • Character Descriptions
  • Neverwhere Map Insert

Besides, it's all of 16 bucks and in stock. I mean, c'mon. ::grin::

Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere: 15th Anniversary Edition.

On November 15, the BBC released bring, Neverwhere: 15th Anniversary Edition, the first television miniseries from bestselling author Neil Gaiman on DVD.

I now have it in my hot little hand. I plan to watch it this weekend. I loved the book so I'm looking forward to diving in and watching it. Plus, they went all out on the anniversary version.

In addition to the miniseries, here's what's on it.

BONUS FEATURES:

  • 15th Anniversary Intro with Neil Gaiman, Lenny Henry and producer Clive Brill
  • 15th Anniversary Audio Commentary with Gaiman, Henry and Brill
  • Original Interview with Gaiman
  • Original Audio Commentary with Gaiman
  • Photo Gallery
  • Character Descriptions
  • Neverwhere Map Insert

That's a lot of Neil Gaiman awesome for my your viewing pleasure. Yes, I'm excited. ;-)

I've got a couple clips. In case you wanna take a look.

If you want a copy, you can get it now for $15.98 over at the BBC America shop.

Is Ivory Soap Taking Aim At Geek Soap Crafters?

Interesting. Ivory soap has decided to be cute and "define" soap.

But here's what's even more interesting. The commenters on You Tube like the other soaps. And those soaps, in my opinion, get free advertising. So I think it kinda backfired on 'em.

However, it did inspire Luxury Lane Soap maker Kylee Lane (her Brain Wash soap gets a nice feature in the Ivory ad) to post a blog post and offer this rather awesome rebuttal to Ivory.

Personally, I don't use Ivory. It seemed to exacerbate my skin issues.

Nope. I lather up with my Black Phoenix Trading Post Port Royal Soap. Because I believe bathing should be a cleansing and sensual experience. And because their soaps (and Kylee's, for that matter) don't leave me itching but feeling clean and happy and smelling like a pirate wench.

And I prefer that any day of the week.

The Avengers Trailer Is Here. Booyah.

So it seems there's been a lot of talk and reaction about the new trailer for The Avengers. Some good and some meh.

I dunno, I can leave it for other folks. Personally, I like to see Joss mixing a little Michael Bay explosioning into his trailer and script. It makes me think maybe someone can blow stuff up and STILL have a story in their movie.

The New Dragon Age Redemption Trailer Proves Felicia Day Is A Badass and...

Support #occupywallstreet While Sitting At Home & Smelling Good. No, really.

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and the Black Phoenix Trading Post are teaming up to help support the folks at #occupywallstreet with capitalistic flair ;-)

Help us feed the #occupywallstreet protesters! You don’t need to do it out of the kindness of your heart: true to the capitalist nature of the good ol’ US of A, we’re not asking you to give something for nothing. You send us money, you get a bottle of perfume and the protesters get some chow. All the money after manufacturing costs that we generate from sales of #OCCUPYWALLSTREET will go to purchasing pizzas for the protesters.

#OCCUPYWALLSTREET

Need I say more? Go buy a bottle. Go on. Feed a protester.

An Open Letter To Gizmodo Regarding Alyssa Bereznak And Her "OKCupid" Article.

In her nerd bashing and, frankly, idiotic blog post about meeting and dating Magic: The Gathering champ Jon Finkel, Alyssa Bereznak claims to be a nerd and then adds "like so many of us!".

Since the article was posted on your site, I'm guessing she includes Gizmodo staff as nerds along with the readers of the article. I'm also guessing she figured that her post would be read by other nerds who would then agree with her that Jon Finkel was, of course, far too nerdy to date!

I have to tell myself that's what she thought. I have to tell myself that's what the editor who approved it thought. I have to believe that.

Otherwise what I'm left to surmise is that her editor (and by extension Gizmodo itself) posted the article as a deliberate form of linkbait with the intention of getting traffic and attention. That's distasteful and beneath you.

Not to mention, she likely assured any nerdy guy who was considering using OKCupid to date may thing twice. I bet they love that.

One other thing...

Gizmodo is supposed to be a tech/nerd/geek blog. Ms. Bereznak not only managed to sound like a catty snot, but she did a premium job of proving the meme that nerd/geek/tech women don't really like men of the same vein. Considering how hard some of us have fought to prove our geek cred, the last thing anyone needs is Gizmodo putting some woman out there who's less nerd and more judgmental bitch.

Shame on you.

I could get angry at the writer. After all, she wrote it. But Gizmodo published it. Which, in my mind, is the bigger issue.

You owe people an apology.

Just sayin,'

For those who asked, the update on my mom's health and my state of mind. ;*

I mentioned I was in Palm Springs and we had a bit of a family medical emergency. Not to get all personal on y'all, but people asked what's up.

My recent chat with @haldira explains it:

me: My last 24 hours has been like an episode of the Amazing Race. I literally tossed all my clothes from SDCC into the hamper when I got back and then had to put them right back in the suitcase to come here.

me: Got to the hotel, and now I'm at my mom's doing laundry. I had to find her car, get her glasses, find her phone, and somehow get her car back to her house. Plus wash clothes and then go see her. I'm waiting for Phil Keoghan to show up.

As long as I don't have to eat worms or repel down a 30 story building, I think I'll manage ;)
So, yeah. Basically, my mom had a heart attack (We'll discuss how she drove herself to Urgent Care yesterday morning at some other time. Frakkin' tough guy.) and she's in the hospital for the next 3 days because she has an artery blockage that they have to try and clear with meds. So, for now, I'm at a hotel for a couple days while I try to get her house in some sort of order (I can't currently find the guest bed because she was in the middle of one of her "projects" ::grin::)

Then, once she's home, we'll see how long she needs me to be here.

Part of what I need to do here is find someone to come clean the house, find someone to help me throw away a ton of stuff (yes, I need help, it's over 100 here and the trash bin is not user friendly), find someone who can help me eBay a bunch of regency novels that have been on my mom's "project" list forever (because, really, it's time for it to get done).

But the good news is she seems to be okay. Just not sure how long my bed at home and I will be separated. I know, it's terrible, but I miss my bed.

Anyway, that's the skinny for now. If I win a million dollars as part of this reality show, then yay. I could use t to ay for some of these shenanigans. Heh.

Thanks for keeping the good thoughts. ;*

To Geek or Not To Geek. The Miss USA Question.

Y'know, the "uproar" is starting and I'm gonna stay out of it. Save for saying this.

In what world is it okay to be mad at people for judging geeks for being "other" but it's okay for geeks to judge others?

Oh and, for the record, she said she was a "history geek". All signs point to yes that she is.

Co-opting? Pandering? Fake? Beauty Queens can't be geeks?

Ask yourself why the vehemence?. Personally, I'd rather not judge anyone's "geekiness" factor, or any other factor. Just the way I'd rather not be judged.

And let's not forget -- beauty pageants give away college scholarships.

If you want to get into debate, here are a few links of people who are debating the issue. Me? I'm Switzerland. (mostly)

I would so totally watch this show. This need to be a Game of Thrones spin off. Dear HBO -- Make. It. Happen.

p.s. I have crushes on both Bronn and Tyrion. ::grin:: I'm not gonna lie.

These are production pics of the upcoming BSG Top Gun Steins from Quantum Mechanix.

1) Yes you can drink out of them.

The New SyFy Original Series "Alphas" Trailer Looks Pretty Sweet

My love for David Strathairn aside (and if you've never seen Passion Fish with he and Mary McDonnell, do it), I like the idea itself. A little X-Men in a more daily life sorta thing. Plus, I'm always down for SyFy original series ;-)

Plus, I have a feeling the writing is gonna be good.*

Pic Of The Day: The Geek Girl Way To Eat Pho

My girl Amy Ratcliffe makes eating pho geek awesome. ;-)

I also love that she brings her Star Wars chopsticks with her when she goes out to eat. We'll discuss her ability to look amazing at all times another time. ::grin::

The Joe Pesci Of Little Kids.

::grin:: It made me laugh. Thought I'd share.

I get the same way when you try and make me take a pic and smile if I don't feel like it. Plus, points for timing it just right!

Monday Musing - BSG Callsigns and Dog Tags.

Okay, so. Now that I'm an official Quantum Mechanix employee, I'm thinking of getting myself a set of Battlestar Galactica Personalized Artisan Dog Tags for SDCC.

Here's the problem. I can't decide what to get. I could use my name, but if you've noticed, I don't really use my name. ::grin:: I could use my Twitter handle, but that seems sort of...non BSG.

Or I could use a callsign.

The problem is, I don;t have a callsign and -- as I understand it -- callsigns are generally given to the pilot, not chosen.

Which means I need your help. ::grin::

I need a callsign.

Any suggestions? ;-) Help me out here.

And, while I'm on the subject. What's your BSG callsign?

You Geek, They Grok: A Geek’s Guide to Leveling Up Your Online Dating Game.

I love being a geek. Don't get me wrong. But I will admit that, while I think I'm pretty interesting, my geekitude has made dating a bit...unique.

Most of the dating sites and books don't really speak to me. Mainly because they don't take into account my love for Warcraft or sci-fi fantasy books and movies. I mean, the folks on eHarmony don't look like anyone I know.

It can make a girl feel like a bit of an outsider.

So, I was happy to see my friend E. Foley aka @geeksdreamgirl come out with You Geek, They Grok: A Geek’s Guide to Leveling Up Your Online Dating Game.

If you check out the information page, you'll get a really good idea what the books about. Plus you get to see great chapter titles like "The Curse of Knowledge (save ends) & The Chasm of SuckitudeTM".

Click here to view more details and enjoy ;-)

Kindergardener Performs The Pandorica Perfectly!

I'm not sure what's more awesome. The fact that the kid gets this Doctor Who "Pandorica" monologue perfect, or the fact that he was doing it for his school talent show!

Thank you Joanna Robinson of Pajiba, who seems to be my link muse today.

GNR's Welcome To The Jungle On Cello. Amazing.

A while back, I posted Smooth Criminal as a cello battle by Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser. Now they're back with Welcome To The Jungle.

Just...wow.

Thanks to pajiba for the heads up.

Doctor Who Themed Never Mind The Buzzcocks Has Killed My Morning Productivity ;-)

Not sure how I missed this special Doctor Who version of "Never Mind The Buzzcocks", but I can now say I have gotten zero work done because I started watching it. This is Part 1. Between David Tennant, Catherine Tate and all the Who awesomeness, you'll want to click through to watch the rest.

I wish we had stuff like this in The States.

An Update On Work and Life

I've always believed life is change, so this is my life and it's changing.

Well, work-wise anyway ;-)

For those of you who have been following along, you know I've been working at Entertainment Earth in one form or another for the last six years. It was an amazing time, a great learning experience and -- let's face it -- I got to play with a lot of really cool toys along the way.

Today was my last day over at Entertainment Earth and I'll admit, I'm a bit sad to say goodbye to a really good group of folks.

Starting Monday, I'll be diving in over at Quantum Mechanix and splashing around full time. I've always enjoyed a challenge and QMx has definitely offered one, so I'm looking forward to seeing what we can create together. Not to mention, they make some of the coolest replicas ever.

I appreciate all of you guys following along and I'm looking forward to the future ;-)

Sometimes you just have to say...

Blargh.

Y'know?

On a positive note, I'll be cracking into L.A. Noire soon. This is a very good thing. And there are some changes coming in June.

For now. Laundry.

How exciting ;-)

QMx's Annual Memorial Day Maquette Sale (Deals)

QMx has decided to do a sale on some of their maquettes for Memorial Day and if you don't pick something up at these prices, I'm gonna have to poke you. They're that good.

Seriously. ;-)

Told ya ;-)

A Pretty Amazing Star Wars Art Nouveau Leia

I have no idea how old this is or who to give credit for it. My friend Charlie sent it my way and I loves it.

If this were the poster for Jabba Cruise Lines I'd go. Heck, it beats Kathie Lee Gifford by a mile.

Update: It's a Star Wars Celebration IV Exclusive print by Adam Hughes. ::grin:: And don't chide me for not knowing. I wasn't there and I'm just seeing this now ;p

Music and Muses: Never Tear Us Apart by Beck

This is courtesy of a post by Pop Candy over a year ago. I kept meaning to actually post is. Funny that it's almost a year to the day.

The ended up doing the entire album over at beck.com.

This vid of New Sensation does a pretty kick ass job of showing how they break it down.

A Different Kind of Follow Friday. ::grin::

It's been a while since I did a real #followfriday. I have my reasons. One of the main ones being that I follow so many interesting people that I have a very hard time narrowing it down to 140 characters.

However, there's one person I wanted to suggest you follow.

Joe Peacock.

I'll be honest. Joe's one of those people that takes some getting used to. He's a self professed asshole. He's wry and snarky and he doesn't pull punches. But that's one of the reasons I like him so much.

Joe's also a geek. He's currently touring with Art of Akira. Explanation: He has an insanely awesome personal Akira collection and he self funds trips to take it on the road.

But what he is most of all, and the reason I recommend him, is a pretty kick ass writer. He's irreverent and bold. He'll write something almost hilariously scathing oner day and then turn around and rip the scab off a very personal wound the next.

In other words, he's real.

So, follow him on Twitter or Facebook and -- if nothing else -- subscribe to his blog.

The power of the Diva compels you.
